What mentoring actually is
A mentoring session is a live 1-on-1 video call a fan books on your calendar. Most athletes use it for film review, recruiting advice, transfer portal questions, position coaching, or just hyping up a younger player.
- You pick the length — 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes per session type.
- You pick the hours — set weekly windows in your own timezone.
- You pick the platform — Zoom and/or Google Meet, your personal link.
- Platform fee is 20% — you keep 80%, paid via Stripe (or parent account if under 18).
Before you start
Grab these before you sit down — the whole setup takes ~15 minutes:
- A permanent meeting link: your Zoom Personal Meeting Room or a standing Google Meet link.
- A rough idea of your weekly window — what 3–6 hour block can you actually defend each week?
- Your profile is published and parent approval is done if you're under 18.
- A connected payout account (Stripe for 18+, parent payouts if under 18). You can set it up later, but you can't go Live without it.
- Permanent Zoom or Meet link
- 3–6 hours/week you can defend
- Profile published + parent approved
- Payout account (Stripe or parent)
Open the mentoring setup page
From your dashboard go to Marketplace → Setup → Mentoring, or open /marketplace/setup/mentoring directly.
Everything lives on one page: About, Meeting Platform, Intro Video, Specialties, Scheduling, Weekly Availability, and Session Types. The Live / Off switch in the top-right won't flip until each required piece is in place.
Tip: the page auto-creates your mentor profile the first time you save anything — you don't have to "create" it manually.
Write a headline and short bio
The Headline is the one-liner that shows on your mentor card in the directory. Make it concrete, not vague.
- 👎 "1-on-1 mentoring with me"
- 👍 "D1 QB — recruiting strategy & QB film breakdowns"
- 👍 "Track sprinter, 10.4 100m — race-day mental game & block work"
The Bio is 2–4 sentences. Tell the buyer what they'll walk away with (a clip plan, a recruiting plan, fixed footwork) — not your whole career story.
Both fields save when you click out of the box (on blur). You'll see a "Saved" toast.
Turn on Zoom and/or Google Meet
Toggle on the platform(s) you'll actually use, then paste your personal meeting link. Fans pick which one they want at checkout — we send the link in the confirmation email.
- Zoom — use your Personal Meeting Room link (looks like
https://us05web.zoom.us/j/123…). Free Zoom accounts cap group calls at 40 minutes — 1-on-1s are unlimited, so you're fine. - Google Meet — create a permanent Meet link in your Google account and paste it (looks like
https://meet.google.com/abc-defg-hij).
At least one platform with a valid link is required before you can flip to Live.
Add an intro video (optional but worth it)
A 15–30 second intro on your mentor page roughly doubles booking rate in our data. It's the difference between "some athlete" and "this person, who I want to learn from."
Cover three things in 20 seconds:
- Who you are — name, sport, level.
- What sessions are best for — "film review, recruiting plans, QB footwork."
- What you bring — one credibility line ("I just signed with…", "I run a 10.4…").
Tap Upload video, pick a file from your phone or laptop, and it lands in your private storage. Max 100 MB. Replace it any time.
Set your scheduling rules
Two dropdowns + a timezone control how your calendar slices up:
- Slot interval — how the calendar is sliced. 30 min is the default and works for almost everyone. Pick 60 if you only sell 60-minute sessions.
- Booking notice — how far ahead fans must book. 12 hoursis a good default. If you're in-season or traveling, push to 24–48.
- Timezone — pick your home timezone. Every weekly window saves in this timezone; fans see slots converted to their own.
Changing the timezone updates all of your windows at once — you don't have to edit each row.
Build your weekly availability
Tap Add window to drop a row. Each row is one weekly recurring block: day of week + start + end. We pre-fill Monday–Friday 4 PM – 7 PM the first time you save — keep it, delete it, or edit it.
- Multiple rows per day are allowed — e.g. Tue 7–8am and Tue 6–8pm.
- Toggle a row off instead of deleting it when you want to pause a block for a few weeks (championship week, finals).
- Defend a real window. 3–6 honest hours/week converts better than 20 hours you keep canceling.
At least one active window is required before you can flip to Live.
Build your session types
Session types are the tiers fans buy. Most athletes ship with two or three: a quick intro, a standard session, and a deep-dive.
Tap Add session and fill in:
- Emoji + name — e.g.
🎯 Film Review. - Duration — 15 / 30 / 45 / 60 minutes. This decides how many calendar slots a booking eats.
- Price — in USD. Edits save when you click out of the field.
- Description — 1–2 sentences telling the buyer the exact deliverable.
- Live toggle — turn a type off temporarily without deleting it.
The trash icon is permanent. Use the toggle when you're not sure.
Price your sessions
You keep 80% of every booking. The 20% platform fee covers payment processing, calendar sync, and the marketplace.
A starter ladder that works for high school / college athletes:
- ⚡ Intro Chat — 15 min — $25 → you keep $20
- 🎯 Film Review — 30 min — $50 → you keep $40
- 🔥 Deep Dive — 60 min — $100 → you keep $80
A 30-min session at $50 is the most common first booking — it's low enough to feel safe and long enough to deliver real value. Start there and raise prices once you have 5+ five-star reviews.
| Tier | Length | Price | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| ⚡ Intro Chat | 15 min | $25 | $20 |
| 🎯 Film Review | 30 min | $50 | $40 |
| 🔥 Deep Dive | 60 min | $100 | $80 |
Flip the switch to Live
With at least one meeting link, one active session type, one weekly availability window, and a connected payout account, toggle Live in the top-right.
- You appear in the Mentoring tab of the marketplace.
- A "Book a session" button appears on your link-in-bio profile.
- Filters (sport, specialty, language, price) start matching you.
If the switch refuses to flip, the toast tells you what's missing — usually "no active session type" or "no meeting link for selected platform."
Run your first session
When a fan books, you'll get an email + push with the time, session type, and their notes. The event also drops into Marketplace → Deliverables.
- Prep 5 minutes early — open their notes, pull up film if it's a film review, have water nearby.
- Join from your saved link (Zoom or Meet). The fan joins the same link.
- Mark complete in Deliverables after the call — that queues the payout and unlocks the buyer's review request.
Funds land in your Stripe account on the normal 2–5 business day schedule. Under-18 athletes get paid through their parent's connected account — same flow, parent sees the deposit.
What to do next
You're live. Two quick moves that compound the first booking:
- Share the link — post your mentoring page once in your IG story and pin it on X. First bookings almost always come from people who already follow you.
- Bundle — once you have a few reviews, offer a 3-pack at a small discount. Repeat sessions are where the real money is.
- Add shoutouts and a rate card so your marketplace page has more than one product.
